Linux Gaming Series: Counter Strike Source

One of the prejudices of Linux is that you can't play any games on it. Wrong! A lot (but of course not all) windows games can be played on Linux, using the all mighty Wine! Wine translates windows function calls to one that Linux understands, so it's not an emulator ;) You'll be suprised what wine already supports.

In this post i'll explain how you can play Counter Strike Source on Linux. It runs pretty damn good, with sometimes a few crashes, but it's very playable. And in the future I'll post some more games that work on Linux. :)

Installing Counter Strike Source (and Steam first), is very easy.

1. Install wine. More info (and repositories for a lot of distro's can be found here: http://www.winehq.org )

2. Download the Steam Installer from http://www.steampowered.com

3. Open a terminal, and naviagte to the directory where the steam installer can be found.

4. Typ the following:

msiexec /i SteamInstall.msi

5. Follow the instructions of the installer, and wait till it's finished.

6. Start steam, and open the My Games tab. Here you can install Counter Strike Source.

Extra tips:
Go to the Steam Preferences, and on the In-Game tab, disable every option there.
